Hundreds Of White Helmets Evacuated From Syria To Jordan

The Associated Press first reported on Friday that USA officials were finalizing plans to evacuate several hundred Syrian civil defence workers and their families from southwest Syria as Russian-backed government forces closed in on the Quneitra province, along the Golan Heights frontier.

Syrian state television said Sunday an Israeli airstrike had hit a military post in the city of Masyaf in Syria's Hama province, but caused only material damage. The IDF said that the "transfer of the displaced Syrians through Israel is an exceptional humanitarian gesture".

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer told Bild newspaper that Germany would take in eight White Helmets members and their families.

According to Jordan's official Petra state news outlet, the evacuees included 800 White Helmets personnel and their families.

The attack comes less than a day after Jordan said 800 people including members of Syria's controversial "White Helmets" opposition group had been evacuated Sunday from southwest Syria with the help of Israel forces.

Founded in 2013, the Syria Civil Defence, or White Helmets, is a network of first responders which rescues the wounded in the aftermath of air strikes, shelling or explosions in rebel-held territory.

The White Helmets, officially called the Syrian Civil Defence, operates a rescue service in rebel-held parts of Syria.

He estimated some 400 fellow rescuers were still in the provinces of Daraa, bordering Jordan, and Quneitra, next to the buffer zone abutting the Israeli-annexed Golan.

A joint Israeli, Jordanian, and United Kingdom operation rescued 422 White Helmets from Syria, and up to 300 reportedly remain trapped. These are people that saved lives and were found in life-threatening danger.

For humanitarian reasons, Jordan gave the United Nations permission to organize the passage of Syrians who entered the Occupied Golan after Britain, Germany and Canada presented a legally binding pledge to resettle them after three months.

Canada has offered to host up to 50 White Helmets and their families, a senior official confirmed to The Canadian Press on condition of anonymity.

More than 20,000 civilians have escaped bombardment on the IS-held corner in the past 24 hours, fleeing into regime-held areas, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

It marked the first such Israeli intervention in Syria's civil war, now in its eighth year.

The advance of the army towards the border still raised concern for Israel, which fears the presence of Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group, and Iran in the region that is known as "Triangle of Death".

"I appreciated the words that were spoken by President Putin together with President Trump regarding the security of Israel during the recent summit", Netanyahu said after the meeting, in remarks relayed by his office. An Israeli military spokesman declined to comment on the report.
