91-year-old woman dies in Williamsburg helicopter crash
Neighbors told local news outlets they saw a small, rickety helicopter crash and heard or felt the impact.
According to troopers, a 911 call was received around 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon for the aircraft crash into the Bristol Commons.
The communications office of the College of William & Mary tweeted that an "aviation incident" has been reported in a residential area near Dillard Complex.
The pilot of the helicopter is still unaccounted for, and emergency workers can not access the crash scene due to instability in the structure.
The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the aircraft was an R44 helicopter with only the pilot onboard. Police say the crash caused a fire at a townhouse. Investigators did not indicated if the owner was the man who was piloting the aircraft.
"Just want to say thanks to all of the emergency personnel who came out and kept everybody safe and also just praying for those who lost everything in the fire", said Chris Robertson.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The Red Cross is helping those displaced by the crash, and police are working to account for all homeowners and renters who lived in the building, Anaya said.
Photos shared by the Virginia State police department showed extensive damage to the residential structure, with the worst of the destruction occurring on the second floor.
