Kate Spade's heartbroken husband says designer suffered from depression

The New York police department announced on Tuesday that Spade had been found unresponsive in her bedroom at home that morning. She was married to Andy Spade, the brother of actor David Spade, and had a 13-year-old daughter, Frances.

Spade was best known for the eponymous handbag brand she founded with her husband in 1993.

In Brosnahan's Instagram post, a beaming Kate Spade dances with her husband Andy to mariachi band music, with a Christmas tree sparkling in the background. "It was a complete shock".

In reference to claims Kate had been troubled by recent issues in their relationship, and was "drinking" as a result, Andy explains the couple had been living separately for 10 months but within blocks of one another.

"I, personally, I don't know about Andy - took off a good nine years raising my daughter and absolutely adored every moment of it", she said in April. Precious in every aspect, just dear- but she was surrounded by YES people, for far too long, therefore she did not receive the proper care for what I believed to be (and tried numerous times to get her help for) Bipolar disorder... stemming from her vast celebrity. "I will say this was not unexpected by me", Saffo told The Kansas City Star via email interview.

"The last I talked with her, the night before last, she was happy planning a trip to California to look at colleges".

'My grandmother gave me my first Kate Spade bag when I was in college, ' Chelsea Clinton wrote on Twitter.

After her death was announced on Tuesday, a family spokesman issued the following statement: 'We are all devastated by today's tragedy.

Kate Spade's sister claims she tried to help the designer seek treatment for depression "3-4 times" in the past, but she refused to tarnish her image.

In an email to the Kansas City Star, Reta Saffo detailed her multiple attempts to get Spade into treatment but said her sister refused, anxious about what people would think of her.

Kate Spade's older sister has come under fire by the late fashionista's family for making "unsubstantiated comments" about how depression drove her to suicide, according to a report.

Spade counted celebrities and many in the close-knit Manhattan fashion world among her close friends and aquiantances.

The Spades were not legally separated nor discussing divorce, the statement adds, but "simply needed a break".

Mr Spade said they remained best friends and were trying to work things out with their daughter Frances Beatrix remaining their priority. There were no business problems.

"We worked together at a clothing store, and I was on the women's side".
