Nwankwo plays as a forward for the Italian Serie A club, Crotone and scored seven goals in the season just ended.

German coach Gernot Rohr named 31-year-old former Chelsea midfielder Mikel as his captain for the extended squad, which was announced in a statement issued by the Nigeria Football Federation.

Also in the list are Leicester City's duo of Wilfried Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, Ogenyi Onazi, Kenneth Omeruo, Olaoluwa Aina, Joel Obi, John Ogu, Moses Simon, Shehu Abdullahi, Elderson Echiejile and China-based Odion Ighalo. He is the only uncapped player in Rohr's list.

Nigeria start their campaign against Croatia on June 16 at the Kaliningrad Stadium before facing Iceland (June 22) and Argentina (June 26) in Volgograd and Saint Petersburg respectively.

All invited players have been told to report at the Le Meridien Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo on Monday, 21st May.
