Justice Department IG: Andrew McCabe "Lacked Candor"

Horowitz wrote in a letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley Friday he expected the report to be released in May, "absent any new additional developments". Multiple news outlets published the report, dated February 2018.

In a tweet sent out on April 13, Donald Trump wasted no time ripping into Andrew McCabe, as well as James Comey just hours after the former FBI Director claimed that the infamous "pee tape' dossier could be legitimate".

The review drew attention late previous year, when it was revealed that special counsel Robert Mueller had removed an investigator from his team because of text messages critical of President Donald Trump.

A spokesman for the inspector general's office declined to comment.

"Among the purposes of the disclosure was to rebut a narrative that had been developing following a story in the WSJ on October 23, 2016, that questioned McCabe's impartiality in overseeing FBI investigations involving [Clinton], and claimed that McCabe had ordered the termination of the [FBI's Clinton Foundation investigation] due to Department of Justice pressure", the report says.

President Trump, battling a never-ending storm of scandals, went after one of his favorite targets Friday, blasting ex-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe as a liar and a thief.

McCabe was sacked by Attorney General Jeff Sessions last month after the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility and inspector general recommended he be terminated from his position for a lack of candor. The firing was followed by reports that McCabe kept personal memos detailing interactions with President Trump.

"McCabe was totally controlled by Comey - McCabe is Comey!", Trump tweeted on Friday in reference to the report on McCabe. "He LIED! LIED! LIED!" The report also says that McCabe told investigators he had informed Comey in October 2016 that he had authorized a discussion of the conversation, while Comey testified that he did not recall McCabe doing so.

Attorney Michael Bromwich sarcastically thanked Trump in a Twitter post Friday for "providing even more material" for a lawsuit he's considering.

Trump is also said to have asked McCabe how he voted in the 2016 presidential election, although he has personally disputed that. The spokesperson said they enlisted the help of the law firm Boies Schiller. Sessions said in a late-night statement in mid-March that office then "issued a disciplinary proposal recommending the dismissal" of McCabe. "He served this country with courage and distinction in a series of hard and important assignments, including as acting director after the president's summary dismissal of Director Comey".

Democrats have emphasized that McCabe's dismissal has nothing to do with the special counsel's investigation into Trump and Russian Federation, while raising questions about the firing.

The 39-page report comes days before the release of Comey's book, A Higher Loyalty. After his firing, which put his government pension in jeopardy, McCabe hired a D.C. lobbying firm to set up a legal defense fund. Inspector General Michael Horowitz, appointed by President Barack Obama, had been reviewing Federal Bureau of Investigation and DOJ actions leading up to the 2016 presidential election.
