GOLD COAST, April 8 -National athlete, Jackie Wong Siew Cheer put up a disappointing performance in the hammer throw at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Yadav, a native of Uttar Pradesh, had claimed a silver at last year's Commonwealth Championships, her first event after making the jump from 63kg to 69kg category.

Vikas, who had taken silver in the 85 kg division at the 2014 CWG in Glasgow, Scotland, registered some of his best lifts in global competition.

Vikas, on the other hand, lifted a combined total of 351 kg (159 kg in snatch and 192 kg in clean and jerk) to win his second medal after winning silver in Glasgow in the men's 85 kg category.

Saina Nehwal was at her ruthless best but top seeds India was tested more than usual before entering the badminton mixed team event finals with a 3-1 win over Singapore in the Commonwealth Games semifinals here on Sunday. His lift broke the Commonwealth and the Games record in clean and jerk. At the Carrara Sports Club, the 22-year-old Punam lifted 95, 98 and 100 in the snatch, and then 118 and 122 in the clean & jerk to finish on 122. As the competition progressed, Bhaker fired 10, 10.3, 10.6, a sensational 10.9 and a 10.4, which put her in the lead position for gold.

Kari's total also equalled the CWG record set by Kounev in 1998. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won gold in the 48 kg category on Thursday.

India has so far won five gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze in weightlifting.

Terming India's performance a "fantastic start", Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore hailed the country's vast potentials saying,"It's a fantastic start".

India are fourth on the medal tally behind leaders Australia (84), England (47), Canada (32).
