Kansas Shooting: US man pleads guilty to charges of killing Srinivas Kuchibhotla

Adam Purinton, 52-year-old US Navy veteran, has pleaded guilty to the murder of Hyderabad-based engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla.

Purinton will now face sentencing for charges including premeditated first-degree murder and two other counts of attempted first-degree murder in the shootings of Alok Madasani and Ian Grillot.

On the fateful day of on February 22, 2017, Kuchibhotla was having drinks at Austin's Bar and Grill with Madasani, who is also from India, when Purinton approached them on the patio and began interrogating about their immigration status, Will Hurst, an assistant district attorney in Johnson County, said in a statement in court on Tuesday.

Kuchibhotla and Madasani worked as engineers at Garmin, a tech company that makes Global Positioning System devices.

The shooting, which took place just over a month after President Donald Trump's inauguration, sent waves of fear rippling through immigrant communities, particularly those from India. Federal authorities allege that Purinton targeted Kuchibhotla and Madasani, both from India, due to their race, ethnicity or national origin. He faces additional hate crime charges in federal court. Kansas City Star newspaper had reported that Purinton provoked them into an argument, questioning their presence and work in the United States, and asking them how they were better than him. The third man was shot when tried to help the two victims.

According to court documents, Purinton was asked to leave the bar when he made derogatory comments.

Purinton sentencing is scheduled for May 4. "Let us continue to work for peace, understanding and love - the things Srinu stood for and will be his legacy", Dumala said.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Purinton committed the offences after substantial planning and premeditation, attempted to kill more than one person in a single criminal episode, and knowingly created a grave risk of death to others on the scene.

Purinton was arrested hours later at an Applebee's restaurant in Clinton, Missouri, about 70 miles away from Olathe.

As he stopped by at a local pub, he had allegedly told the bartender about the shooting incident in an inebriated state, following which, the staff informed the police.
