North Korea Leader To "Vigorously Advance" Ties With South

Few believe that North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un is going to attack the United States, or, as long as we maintain our alliance, attack South Korea.

Chung will directly explain the outcome of his Pyongyang trip to the highest USA officials during his three-day visit to Washington, according to an official from the presidential office.

"Chairman Kim said that even denuclearisation could be among the agenda items for talks between North Korea and the USA", a South Korean official said.

Serious violations are continuing in North Korea, a top United Nations expert said in a report published Wednesday, stressing though the opportunity to open "meaningful dialogue" on improving the rights situation with Pyongyang.

President Donald Trump reacted positively to an unexpected willingness from North Korea to conduct talks on freezing its nuclear program, but some analysts are cautioning that the Trump administration does not have the experts in place needed to prepare and conduct such hard negotiations. He said Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will establish a "hotline" communication channel to lower military tensions, and would speak together before the get-together.

A South Korean diplomatic source cited by the South China Morning Post said that officials may consider sending Kim Jong Un's younger sister, Kim Yo-jong, with the delegation.

"This public display of contempt for universal norms against chemical weapons use further demonstrates the reckless nature of North Korea and underscores that we can not afford to tolerate a North Korean WMD program of any kind", she added.

Katsuyuki Kawai, an adviser to Abe who is in Washington this week, told Reuters before departure that there is a huge need to reinforce the alliance and trilateral coordination among the United States, Japan and South Korea.

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office the United States had "come a long way, at least rhetorically" with North Korea and "statements coming out of South Korea and North Korea have been very positive".

Ko appeared in North Korean state media last month, condemning a defector couple in the South and reiterating his links to the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

"The Government of North Korea used the chemical warfare agent VX to assassinate Kim Jong Nam, in the Kuala Lumpur airport", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

The two leaders will meet on the southern side of the fortified border village of Panmunjom for what would be only the third inter-Korean summit since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

The United States formally concluded Tuesday that North Korea murdered Kim Jong Un's half-brother with the banned VX nerve agent, blasting Pyongyang for deploying a chemical weapon in a packed worldwide airport. While the United States began pressuring Kim's regime to denuclearlize because of their direct threats to the safety of America and its allies, Kim's rhetoric in recent months has shifted to suggesting that their behavior is a response to American aggression, rather than the catalyst initiating it. Until this point, North Korea had rejected committing to denuclearization as a precondition for talks. The Trump administration also pushed through some of the harshest economic sanctions any country has ever faced.
