This shooting come exactly seven months since fellow Clinton officer Gary Michael was shot and killed during a traffic stop.

A joint investigation is underway between the Highway Patrol, Clinton Police Department, and Henry County Sheriff's Department. He stayed with the department as a reserve officer until again returning to full-time duty shortly after Clinton Police officer Gary Michael was killed in the line of duty in August 2017.

The shooter is believed to be barricaded inside of a home.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe says the law enforcement community is saddened by the tragic event. Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty. He returned home in May of 2014 from Afghanistan where he served as a bridge crew member, a radio communications manager and maintained all military bridges in multiple regional commands.

According to Morton's Facebook page, the officer graduated from Knob Noster High School, he attended the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg and served in the National Guard as well as the US Army. "I'm heartbroken. I just woke up to news that one of my lifelong friends was shot in the line of duty last night".
