Celebrated Egyptian soccer star Mohamed Salah, who plays for Liverpool Football Club in England, was last night named the African player of the year at an award ceremony held in Accra, Ghana.

Borussia Dortmund and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came third.

Salah who joined Liverpool from As Roma at the start of the season has scored 17 Premier League goals this term. I had a fantastic time, especially with the national team where we qualified to the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

Known better as a failed Chelsea winger, Salah's iconic moment in 2017 was when he helped Egypt reach the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

Cuper also led the Pharaohs to the final of the 2017 African Cup of Nations final.

"This award is a big award for's a special moment for me in my career".

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has dedicated his 2017 CAF Player of the Year award to kids in Africa and Egypt, urging them to keep dreaming.

Salah's Liverpool teammate and Senegal midfielder Sadio Mane and Nigeria born Chelsea midfielder Victor Moses also got seven votes each from the country.

"I think we have a good team and we did well in the African Cup and the qualification for the World cup, everybody saw that".

Aubameyang was Bundesliga top scorer with 31 goals last season, holding off Bayern Munich and Poland ace Robert Lewandowski.

Egypt has produced great players among others Mohamed Aboutrika, Hossam Hassan and Ahmed Mido.

We hope one day the best player will be based in Africa.

Liverpool take on rivals Everton in the FA Cup this evening.
