Local media reported that several guns were found in the room when backup arrived.

Houston police arrested a man who allegedly had stashed a cache of weapons and ammo on the 28th floor of the city's Hyatt Regency hotel early Sunday.

Houston police say they don't believe an intoxicated man arrested for having several guns in his hotel room meant to use the weapons.

Police were initially called out at around 1.30am and were arresting the "drunk and belligerent man" for trespassing when an officer spotted the ammunition lying in his room. After hotel security called police, authorities went to the man's room to gather his belongings. When investigators looked into his room further, they located an AR-15, a shotgun, a handgun and lots of ammunition, Macintosh said. Investigators say he was by himself and they are trying to figure out why he had the weapons.

He was booked with trespassing and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

Police said the man is jailed.

Acevedo said on Twitter earlier Sunday that the situation was "contained" and there were no specific threats to Houston.

Despite the discovery, hotel officials said they are still hosting tonight's New Year's Eve celebration, which is reportedly set to host a massive 50,000 balloon drop at midnight.
