Stuned by the attack, dozens of CRPF personnel were in the two buildings at the time of the attack. Two heavily armed JeM terrorists attacked the camp at about 2 am, said Inspector General of CRPF Ravideep Sahi. The terrorists are said to have lobbed grenades and then opened fire at the training centre located in Awantipora.

One of deceased was identified as constable Saif-ud-din Ganai of Nowgam in Srinagar. Sources added constables Narender and Malve Samadhan, who sustained bullet injuries, are stated to be out of danger.

As exchange of fire continued following the infiltration, militants were holed up in a building block at the camp - where they were later gunned down. "As long as our neighbour keep on sending people like this, my police, my security forces and people of Kashmir will have to go through this", The DGP said. CRPF's spokesman Rajesh Yadhav told Mirror that terrorists opened indiscriminate firing and injured three personnel who were rushed to hospital where one of them succumbed. A unit of the Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed that called itself the "Afzal Guru squad" claimed the attack. JeM statement issued to a local news agency in Srinagar stated the "blood of martyrs is yielding results". "Such attacks will continue till the last Indian soldier leaves Kashmir", it said.
