Florida's minimum wage will increase to $8.25 an hour Monday, 15 cents higher than the current rate. Goodell said the business didn't shut down, it merely moved from a "high-cost state to a low-priced state".

Of the 22 European Union member states with a minimum wage, only workers in Luxembourg (€1,999 per month) receive a higher monthly minimum wage than workers in Ireland, who take home €1,563 per month, according to the report, valid as of January 1, 2017.

"We though are concerned about further efforts to increase that and make MI an even greater outlier in this area", says Block.

Although the raise will help poor working Ohioans, but $8.30 per hour still leaves a full-time worker about $3,000 short of the poverty line for a family of three and this is why there is a push from many workers to pass a state-level $15 per hour minimum wage.

Goodell said he is most concerned about the loss of entry-level jobs. There is no cost to employers.

Horrigan said phasing in the increases will be beneficial to businesses as it allows them to adapt.

"We see the $12 an hour as being a pathway to economic justice", says Farris.

Wendy Block is a spokeswoman with the Michigan Chamber of Commerce.

The minimum wage will rise to $11 an hour for workers in Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties and $10.40 an hour for employees in the rest of the state. For example, since 2016 the minimum wage has increased 14.5% and is scheduled to continue to increase through 2021. Employees seem to feel that it does not matter, if you switch jobs or not when getting paid so little. "Additionally, more costs and regulations make NY less competitive with other regions in terms of economic growth".
