Two stabbed after confronting alleged thief at Macy's in Mall of America

"Our thoughts are with the families involved", the Mall of America said.

The Minnesota's thief's plans were thwarted when his intended target caught Abdirahaman in the act, only for the would-be thief pulling a knife and stabbed the man in turn.

One victim was reportedly stabbed in the back and another has numerous knife wounds.

The scuffle and ensuing response by police freaked out nearby shoppers waiting in line for their kids to see Santa.

Authorities say the Macy's store was put on lockdown during the incident, but the rest of the 520-store mall remained open and was not placed on lockdown.

Witnesses also reported seeing Abdirahaman acting strangely before the attack. The victims were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They were transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis for treatment.

Police identified the suspect as 20-year-old Mahad Abdiaziz Abdirahaman.

Abdirahaman, who is now being held on two counts of probable cause first-degree assault, was pictured in his mugshot bruised and bloodied. An investigation is ongoing. The family members were able to disarm the suspect. "By the time we got to the main area - the men's department is to the right - more police started running in with their guns drawn".
