TJ Dillashaw KO's Cody Garbrandt to win UFC Bantamweight Title

Dillashaw got up from an early knockdown to regain the 135-pound title he lost almost two years ago by disputed decision with a second-round TKO of Garbrandt in the co-main event of UFC 217 at Madison Square Garden.

"It's been a real rivalry ever since T.J. left", Urijah Faber, the retired mixed martial arts fighter who founded the Sacramento-based team, told The Bee's Ailene Voisin.

Garbrandt (11-1), was poised and efficient throughout the opening round and dropped Dillashaw with a sweeping left hook before the horn to end the round.

Round 1. Garbrandt starts with a body kick. He gets to his feet, but staggers back to his stool. In the next exchange, Dillashaw landed a right hand that sent Garbrandt down for the second time. Garbrandt fires out a right hand. "He hits hard", Dillashaw said. "He's a hell of a fighter". When I go to (flyweight), we're going to have to lean that down. Garbrandt proved that point just before the rounded ended, catching Dillashaw with a counter right that dropped him.

"This isn't the end of Cody Garbrandt". It was a testament to Garbrandt's blazing hand speed and punching power.

"The kid is fast. The better shape you are, the better your chin is". They were introduced to each other through Garbrandt's brother and qucikly became friends. Dillashaw whiffs on a kick and Garbrandt showboats afterwards. It took me a year-and-a-half - well actually, nearly two years - to get it.

"The reason why I look so lean at 135 is the way I work", Dillashaw said.

Dillashaw lost the bantamweight title to Dominick Cruz in January 2016 by split decision. With the bantamweight belt back, Dillashaw has his eyes set on the flyweight title.

"This belt has been around my waist the whole time in my mind", Dillashaw said. "I should still be the champion and I am the champion". I should still be the champion. This is my belt.

"Listen, you can't be in a position where you're like, 'I want $2 million". You got that record and it's fake and you know it. "I'm coming for you. I'm coming to 125's and I'm stopping your record".
