Vance Joseph names Brock Osweiler starting quarterback

The Denver Broncos will bench quarterback Trevor Siemian for Brock Osweiler.

Osweiler spent his first four National Football League seasons with the Broncos and will make his first start for the team since 2015 when he started seven games while Peyton Manning was injured.

After a poor offensive performance on in Kansas City on Monday night, Broncos coach Vance Joseph has decided to make a change at the quarterback position. Paxton Lynch, a first-round choice last season, continues to work his way back from a sprained right shoulder that has kept him out all season.

Coming in to make your first start of the season against the 7-1 Eagles may be hard, but Osweiler has handled more hard environments and greater pressure. We're not yet two years removed from that happening, and now - 23 regular season games later - Osweiler is finally getting another shot to be Denver's starting quarterback.

"The thing is, he knows the system", Broncos general manager John Elway said of Osweiler on Tuesday during an interview with the team's radio partner, Orange and Blue 760. Instead, Osweiler bolted to Houston in free agency for $37 million in guarantees and Siemian won the Broncos job instead.

Siemian beat out Lynch for the starting job during the preseason, but he has struggled to replicate some of the success he enjoyed in 2016. The then fourth-year quarterback threw for 1,589 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions during the six games in which he was the only Broncos quarterback to attempt a pass. "But [after] losing three games in a row and having five turnovers [Monday], anything's possible". That will leave Siemian to be Osweiler's backup in Philadelphia. He didn't get much help from others; wide receiver Bennie Fowler, who started in place of the injured Emmanuel Sanders, dropped a potential touchdown pass that could have pulled the Broncos within 10 points midway through the third quarter and given them a better platform from which to try and build a rally. "I think it's fair to examine that position and all positions".
