On the occasion of the 142nd birth anniversary of India's first home minister and deputy prime minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi eulogized the "Iron Man of India" who, interestingly, had once censored the saffron party's parent organisation - the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Kirron Kher in her address said, "National Unity Day is an occasion to introspect and emulate Sardar Patel's legacy of long enduring struggle for bipartisanship".

A large number of people, including sports personalities like Sardar Singh, Deepa Karmakar, Suresh Raina and Karnam Malleswari participated in the Run. "But the youth of India respects him and his contribution towards the building of our nation", The Prime Minister said. Today India is a strong and capable country. Shri Singh said that a year ago, at the Run for Unity event, the Prime Minister had said, "One can see the tricolor from Kashmir to Kanyakumari; from the Himalayas to the ocean". Guest speaker Rajiv Lochan, professor in department of history said, "Sardar Patel's contribution is unparalleled as he was the one who fought the slavery ingrained by Britishers".
