Marilou Danley, Paddock's girlfriend, issued a statement Wednesday afternoon through her attorney, Matt Lombard.

Ms Danley, who moved from the Philippines to Queensland in the 1980s, is a potential key figure in discovering Paddock's motive.

"It never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone", she said in the statement. The attack killed 59 people and wounded more than 500.

Lombardo said investigators were examining the possibility Paddock's purchase of more than 30 guns in October 2016 may have been precipitated by some event in his life. "In that sense, I thank him for sparing my sister's life".

At the evening news conference, FBI Las Vegas special agent in charge Aaron Rouse said several hours of interviews had been conducted with Danley, and that she was cooperating with investigators, and had not been taken into custody.

Officials say Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock had been stockpiling guns since 1982 and bought 33 firearms in the previous year.

Danley said she was grateful but "worried" that the unexpected trip home and the money "was a way of breaking up with me". "We just saw heartbreakingly in Las Vegas the danger that poses to society and we got to make sure our laws are updated to reflect that", Lesser said.

Where other mass killers have left behind a trail of plain-sight clues that help investigators quickly understand what drove them to violence, Paddock, 64, had almost no close friends, social media presence or other clear connections to the broader world. She was sent away.

Rabadi also said such tools are often used by sportsmen who want to modify their weapons for activities like target practice.

"As technology has come through in the last number of years I believe the original authors of the act probably did not envision this kind of accessory being used for modifications of this sort", he said. "We stayed with them in Memphis in 2000", she said.

McCabe told CNN that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was going through Paddock's communications, financial records, associates and video surveillance - anything to try to piece together the puzzle of his motive. "Only Marilou can maybe help", she said.

Immigration documents show Marilou Danley had been overseas for weeks and was in the Philippines on Sunday when Paddock opened fire on a crowd, killing 59.

She arrived in Manila on Sept. 15, flew to Hong Kong on Sept. 22, returned to Manila on Sept. 25 and was there until she flew to Los Angeles on Tuesday night, according to a Philippine immigration official. "We believe it was a local individual". "She is now a person of interest".

Her other sister added: "She is a good person and a gentle soul ... a mother, grandmother, a sister, a friend". Philippines immigration bureau spokeswoman Antonette Mangrobang said authorities there had been working with United States officials.

Photos from 2013 show Paddock visiting the southeastern Asian island nation.
